Ahwatukee Foothills Cyclist Killed in Tragic Accident

The Arizona Republic reports that 50-year-old Gerald Hickman of Ahwatukee Foothills died this past Saturday morning when he rode his bicycle into a utility truck that was parked on the side of the road. Mr. Hickman was riding with two friends, who safely rode around the parked vehicle on Fifth Avenue north of Chandler Boulevard. Mr. Hickman apparently did not see that truck and rode into it. Mr. Hickman was a well-known Phoenix attorney and an avid cyclist.

I believe this may be the Gerry Hickman who is an attorney here in Phoenix. Great guy; hope I'm wrong. It's a jungle out there and we have to be alert 100% of the time. Condolences to Mr. Hickman's family and friends.

Having read subsequent reports on the incident from different sources it's not quite apparent what actually caused Mr. Hickman's accident other than the two particulars , i.e. Mr. Hickman himself and a utility truck.
I would like to steal this forum to address a related concern , however.
I have personally witnessed the lack of verbal communication between pack riders and am surprised that more accidents don't occur more often. Simply relying on the person behind you to be alert to your silent hand signals isn't very considerate , as some of us aren't concentrating on your hand - so feel free to verbalize whatever hazards you see ahead - the blind amongst us thank you in advance for this courtesy.

P.S...I'm not anonymous , my name's John Brush. Feel free to berate me at jbsr1@hotmail.com
